"Life's pretty good, and why wouldn't it be? I'm a pirate after all." Why a pirate?
"Pirates are daring, adventurous, and willing to set forth into uncharted territories with no guarantee of success. They reject the status quo and refuse to conform to any society that stifles their creativity and independence. ...Pirates don't much care about public perception; they proudly fly their flags in defiance." (Burgess p.xii) The first section of the book reviews the essential components of becoming a true PIRATE! P - Passion I - Immersion R - Rapport A - Ask & Analyze T - Transformation E - Enthusiasm WELCOME PIRATES!! Sail Ho! (An exclamation meaning another ship is in view. The sail, of course, is the first part of a ship visible over the horizon.) Here to represent Mary of Nazareth Catholic School in Darnestown, Maryland, Me pirate name is Barbara. Teaching first grade is a yearly adventure. My purpose for taking this journey with my fellow pirates is to launch a new year with an ocean of passion. A vision of sharing my personal learning with a pirate costume at Back To School Night! Let's sail this ship!

I am a middle school Social Studies teacher at St. Pius X Regional in Bowie. If it's summer, it's time to learn something new to bring to my classroom! I was intrigued by both the book study format and the book.

Happy summer! I always loved the pirate theme when my kids were summer swimmers! I'm the resource teacher at St. John the Baptist in Silver Spring and I've been reading several books through out the year related to education - so I figured I might as well try to earn a credit over the summer for reading! Looking forward to our discussions :)

Hello! I teach 4th grade at Little Flower School in Great Mills, MD. I signed up for this book study because I thought it sounded interesting. This will be my third year teaching, my second full year at LFS and I think this book study and getting to talk to other teachers of various grade levels and subjects will give me the opportunity to gain insight, ideas, and ways to improve interactive lessons I have already tried.

I'm the 5th grade teacher at St. Bart's in Bethesda and I decided to join this book study to add more hook ideas to my arsenal! With older students especially, I find buy-in is even more important, so I want even more ideas to mix up how I engage students and begin each lesson!

Hi folks! I'm John Meehan, and I'm an instructional coach at Bishop O'Connell High School in nearby Arlington, Va. Saw this book study online and knew it was simply too good to pass up. I've had the great fortune of "sailing" around the country to various education conferences and the like while reading countless teacher PD books -- and I've likewise had the pleasure of getting to know a number of the Dave Burgess authors personally in my travels which has been game-changing in opening all sorts of professional doors for me (if you have a second, check out my gamified class website in the link. Amazing stuff, courtesy of inspiration from the Dave Burgess crew). I'm here to pay it forward and to learn from you all! Looking forward to a great summer read.

Hello Everyone! My name is Chris Bliss and I am the math resource teacher at St. Pius X Regional School in Bowie, MD. I just finished my Masters degree in Special Education from The Catholic University of America this past spring. I am feeling a little adrift without a paper deadline, so I thought this book study would be a good way to keep the brain sharp while I navigate calm waters. Through my Masters Program, I also learned that professional development is a surefire way to keep the enthusiasm for teaching alive!
